– Turns down the loudest part of a sound to make it sound more even.
概訳:音量を上げずに音をラウドに聞こえさせるもの。ラウドな部分を抑え、安定して聞こえさせる。

  • 4:1 ratio
  • attack will vary use from 1-10 msec
  • release = auto on SSL G Comp, Smart C2 or Focusrite R3

Types of Compressors

  1. Optical – LA2A, LA3A, Tube Tech CL1B
    – great on bass, vocals, gtrs.
    – not great with quick transients
  2. FET – Field Effect Transistor
    UA1176! ultra fast attack & release
    – very colored, not transparent
  3. VCA – Voltage Controlled Amplifier – SSL G+
    NEVE 33609 – mix bus + mastering
  4. Variable MU – Older design of gain control using a rebiased vacuum tube. they lack a traditional threshold & ratio, but rely on the input and output controls to drive the compressor.

  1. Multiband – you can affect the dynamic range of multiple freq ranges.
    Fabfilter Pro-MB, iZotope Ozone 7, Waves C6, McDSP MC2000, ML4000
  2. Sidechain or Ducking – use a signal to trigger the compressor.
    Waves H-Comp, API2500, Fabfilter Pro-MB
  3. Parallel Comp – (NY Comp) blending an uncomp signal with a heavily comped one.
    The Glue, Kush UBK1

好みはある…という言葉で安易に片付けてもいけないのだけど、目安としてメモしとくとよさそうだなと。
今少し作風を変えてるせいもあって、個人的にはFairchildとdbxの出番多いかな…。
思うに、スレッショルド等のパラメーターを把握するのも大事だけど、入力レベルの在り方をもう一度意識し直してもいいかもしれない。
